Intellect beyond reason

We were serious students at 20. A step away from tackling the world. Two steps away from making our own money. We had plans for the universe, for the way people thought and behaved. And when we died we thought we would have left a different and better place than the one we were born into.

Since we lived a lot on air we had enough time to shoot the breeze. As we sipped coffees and bit into sandwiches, we talked of living lives unbinding. We insisted on having our own minds, not giving in to social norms.

In came Mr K who pushed us towards our dreams. And laughed at us behind our backs. At a respected 45, married with kids and a couple of published books to his name, he was an authority on creative writing. And we clung to his every word. We were ashamed that Mr K thought us to be unsure and not ready yet to follow our paths. It embarassed us when M came back from sharing his bed one day and said that Mr K has offered to 'pick everybody's cherries.'

"Your friends need to loosen up. I bet they haven't been with any men. It's time they know what life is about. Get them to me and I could help pick their cherries." Exact words that were told to 20 year old M, who was the real writer among us and kept telling us "you need to experience to write."

Thankfully none of us took up his offer to help even though we were in awe of the man.

Now years later, I wonder why we didn't react some more. Why we couldn't stop the man from making such obscene offers all the time. Why we didn't do more than laugh when M narrated it to us. And finally why we didn't confront him and used some muscle power on him, trashing him well.

It infuriates me to think he could be still sleeping around with girls his daughter's age and some naive dumb girl must be waiting for intellect to get tranferred from him to her. But I hope one day there will be someone who will break his nuts before he can pick any cherries.

Anumita, personally I feel the Mr. K in your post needs to have a lot of things "plucked"; starting maybe with all the hair and nails on his body!!!

It is a sad state of affairs that people like Mr. K are alive and kicking right from the time when I was at school and college (no, it was only a little over a decade that I was at school too). Even then they would make improper advances that involved lewd gestures, or talk and in some extreme cases, more too!! Even then I would be appalled; but then most guys and girls of my generation were easily intimidated by authority and senior figures. It was as if we had a kind of blindfold when it came to such people. Now, I feel ashamed to say I might have kept quiet.

Of course, things have changed now. I am talking now only about my attitude towards such instances, but also the fact that today's youth are much more explixit about their feelings and emotions than we ever were. They are not the sort to take such crap lying down (literally). I hope and pray that all the Mr. Ks in the world meet such fiery youngsters at least once!!! I'm sure they return (if they did) with a ahem.....much altered countenance (both literally and figuratively).

P.S. Somehow the IG (or someone) who was caught on camera repeatedly molesting a young girl in his sanctuary comes to mind. He had the nerve to deny it and say that he was being framed, the sicko!!!! The news channel that telecast it insisting on looping that tape repeatedly and I remember the feeling of revulsion that I associate with it. I hope to God that the guy got what he deserved!!!

Ppl like Mr K alws exists in the world. Right from the dawn to today these beasts only rule the planet. And its not their fault only. Its the respect that ppl like you and me give to them elivate them to that position. I dont want to sound rude but girls (mainly teenage girls) alws runs after somebody who is more intelligent/handsome/popular etc etc.. It is our psychology. your fiend M is the example. And it will (the running after or getting impressed) will alws happen. So its upon them to decide and taught whether they want real nice ppl(may be less popular/handsome/intelligent...) or a Crook......

Disgusting.
Creative writing comes straight from the heart and cherries or peaches have nothing to do with it.
M should have casterated him.
If not, the rest of you should have. He should have been deprived of his testicular fortitude for the rest of his life...
When you have to do all this to get laid, might as well pay for it...
Still, if you mail me his contact details (methinks i know this character. is he a eng prof @ KM coll?) i would be more than glad to hold him tight, and slide down a razors edge using his balls as the brake...

You know, if i were you i would still go ahead and blow the whistle on him. its never too late... and someone will be saved.

aaah..the proverbial dirty old man...the problem is that such offences ( making lewd suggestions) are still considered a relatively minor offence in India...it's about time, we made the punishment more strict

Blogger Pranav said...

But then did M sleep with him because he forced her to?? Do you think relatively matured at 20, someone would sleep with a 45 year old just to affect a transfer of intellect? I understand being with someone if you're in awe of him/her...and while the teacher-student ethics thingie comes into play...it seems from your post that they were both consenting adults...

of course, the comment he made about the rest of you is definitely something to be made an issue of...but then people are very different in private than public...I'm sure I and others say a lot of outrageous things privately!

Blogger Pranav said...

whoops...just reread that he said those same things in public to his students too...he definitely should be dragged to the butchers then!

But then this reminds me of my college days...a HoD we had used to touch our female classmates while scolding them about some question that the class couldnt answer. I still remember all of us standing because we didnt answer a question and he stroking a girl's neck and talking to her mockingly for not having been able to answer a question. At that point, noone paid much thought to it somehow...its only now that we sometimes talk of that and similar incidents that we realise what was happening. too bad the bugger's already dead!

i dont understand, M was attracted to him (in any way). ANd consented. She cant be naive then. If she felt terrible after the event, then you cant blame the professor. What are Ms views on sex and atraction? DO they match the professors?

When times passes, it leaves its mark behind in its passing. When courage gathers form, it leaves its mark behind in its fury. As they say, it's never too late to be sorry, so is it never too late to speak up, loud, and let the anger disperse it all over until there is nowhere for him to hide or bide his time.
